1 How to join a DAO
By Samantha Marin

Step 1: Research DAO ecology
There are many types of DAOs, including social DAOs, protocol DAOs, project-based DAOs, and even corporate-turned-DAOs. Since there isn't a complete repository of DAO information, you'll have to do some digging around the web to find the right DAO for you. Below are some resources to help you get started.
- DAO Landscape, created by @Cooopahtroopa on Mirror.
- This huge list of DAO resources, created by @kinjal on Mirror.
- DAO project database, maintained by DAOists.
- Top DAOs, from the token market cap.

Step 2: Choose the DAO that best fits your goals
You can't know the true temperament of a DAO unless you join it. However, if you don't want to buy the governance tokens required to vote, it is possible to join without voting rights. Every DAO is different, but many have the option to walk in without buying tokens.
Most DAOs operate via Discord, so do a Twitter search to find out how to join. Additionally, some DAOs have publicly accessible websites or repositories. For example, Bankless DAO's Notion page is home to all the great resources.
When you join a DAO, the first thing you should evaluate is the vibe. At the heart of a DAO is the community. It's everyone in the community that makes The DAO such a great place to work. Unlike traditional jobs, the switching costs of jumping from one DAO to another are minimal, so be sure to find a place where you're a joy to be with and reflect the values you hold.

Step 3: Get to work
You are now inside the DAO! Congratulations. Your first priority is not to get overwhelmed. There's a bunch of activity in The DAO, mostly in Discord. You must be tempted to read all the messages, but keeping up with every workflow is next to impossible. This process will be very discouraging and ultimately exhausting.
The best way to start is to find a place where you can provide value. Pick one thing to start doing. Whether it's taking notes for a meeting or getting into a channel to brainstorm with other members. Start with small things, as long as you are down-to-earth, you can gradually move towards success.
Attending a conference is often the best place to start. That's why there is a calendar at the bottom of this post! It's hard to understand what's going on in The DAO just by reading the Discord text channel. Listening to other members talking is the best way to get to know your fellow DAOs. It's also easier to introduce yourself there so your message doesn't get buried in the channel.

Step 4: Contribute to Governance
At this point, you are basically a member of DAO, and now it's time to participate in governance. In order to vote, you need to hold a certain amount of governance tokens. You can buy tokens directly, usually through Uniswap or SushiSwap. But another way to collect tokens, is to roll up your sleeves and get to work. DAO workers are usually paid in DAO governance tokens, so you can work your way through becoming a voting member. Everything you contribute to the DAO is rewarded with tokens, so the more work you put in, the sooner you'll become a voting member.

question and answer
— Is there a fee to join the DAO?
It depends on different DAOs. Some DAOs have free access to their communities. While others, you have to buy tokens. For example, Bankless DAO has a guest pass system and a read-only Discord channel so potential members can get a feel for the DAO before committing their money.
— Do I need to be a crypto expert or developer to join the DAO?
No. DAOs need people with a wide variety of skills and knowledge bases. For example, many DAOs have writers, graphic designers, marketers, software developers, translators, artists, videographers, community leaders, and more.
— How much time do you need to devote to the DAO per week?
You can give as much as you want—that's the beauty of open source projects built through grassroots communities. Instead of a strict 9-5, you can contribute 2 hours a week and still count as a beneficial DAO member. Alternatively, you can contribute to numerous projects and end up earning a full-time salary on-chain. (Quit your boring job? Great idea.) It really is that easy!

"Working for a DAO"
This is an hour-long video about Gaby Goldberg, Cooper Turley and Alex Zhang's discussion on "Working for DAO" at the Governance and DAO Summit of ETHOnline2021. This conversation gave us an idea of what it's like to work on a day-to-day basis for The DAO — and Friends with Benefits specifically. They give an in-depth look at how they got into the DAO space and when they decided to work full-time for the DAO. Conversations include the following topics:
- The challenges of transitioning from a web2 company to a web3 world.
- How the concepts of compensation and equity work in DAOs.
- How the future of work allows you to spread your skills across several DAOs instead of just working for one company.
- Figure out how to start contributing and get involved in the community.
Pods: Improved Token Voting
picture
The Orca protocol hopes to solve the token voting problem by establishing a unique organizational structure of sub-DAOs within the large-scale DAO system, to achieve simultaneous horizontal and vertical development, and to help DAOs further expand.
- Decentralization can make organizations more chaotic.
- Making operations more organized means compromising decentralization.
- Token voting could fundamentally deviate from the DAO's intrinsic incentive structure.
- The token voting solution of the Orca protocol is to set up multiple "pods" as sub-DAOs within a larger DAO.
- Each "pod" will control its own operations and funds through its own multi-signature.
- Individual "pods" will vote on DAO governance, abstracting the governance process from token holders.
"MakerDAO Members Discuss Starting a Company, Paying Taxes, and More Far-reaching Issues"
Original link
MakerDAO is starting a discussion about how it should connect with governments around the world, which will have far-reaching consequences beyond simply paying taxes. Here are some points worth noting:
- The tax implications of a full transition from the Maker Foundation to the DAO.
- If they were to incorporate, in which jurisdiction would they choose to incorporate?
- MakerDAO currently has no legal structure. How DAOs should be classified is still up in the air.

Insights into the entire DAO ecosystem
"The Value of Governance"
Main points:
Main points:
- "Value" can be understood from the perspective of economics, sociology or linguistics.
- Behaviors and objects become meaningful or valuable to humans when they are incorporated into social systems.
- Governance tokens allow people to freely express their thoughts and beliefs by contributing and voting on community proposals in an open forum.
- In web3, the value of a governance token comes from its ability to influence the evolution of a new system, define the impact it will have on society, and accumulate associated status and reputation.
- Governance premium is equal to the value of participating in protocol governance, which reflects investors' perception of control over the future of the project.
- Variables that affect the governance premium include project growth, Assets Under Management (AUM), and community strength.

The State of the DAO - Beginner Friendly Activity
DAO Spotlight: CityDAO
Put the land on the blockchain! Crazy idea, right?
Meet CityDAO - a community with audacious ambitions to build a city on the blockchain!
—Where did it happen?
In vast, resource-rich Wyoming! Another interesting fact about Wyoming - Wyoming was the first state to recognize DAOs as legal entities.
CityDAO's mission is to build a city where each piece of land is an NFT that can be co-owned by DAOs or individuals. Governance of a DAO is directly related to citizenship.
-What does it mean?
Citizenship in CityDAO is hierarchical, and each level has different rights. Citizens of CityDAO have priority access to airdrops of NFTs representing land and also have access to an internal Discord channel. There are three different citizenship NFTs:
1. First Citizen NFT - Only 1 NFT of this highest tier, with exclusive naming rights and top priority participation in land airdrops, and of course voting rights and citizen Discord channel access!
2. Founding Citizen NFT - There are 50 NFTs at this level, and holders have the right to participate in land airdrops, second only to the first citizen, as well as voting rights and citizen Discord channel access.
