Recently, the Filecoin community approved Filecoin Improvement Proposal 18 (FIP-0018), which officially changes the terminology in marketing assets, documentation, and communication channels from "miner" to "storage provider".

Through this proposal, it means that Filecoin is moving in a positive direction, and it will be more convenient for Filecoin community partners to provide storage infrastructure and services for the network. At the same time, this change helps to highlight the utility of the Filecoin network and is the beginning of a series of incremental changes proposed by Filecoin to help the network create a new narrative.

With the support of the community, Filecoin will begin using the new terminology for newly created marketing assets. In the coming weeks and months, it is also recommended that the following websites be updated to promote new terms where possible. For example: filecoin.io, docs.filecoin.io, github/filecoin, Filecoin Foundation website and other media channels and tools throughout the ecosystem for updates.

motivation for change

Filecoin's long-term vision has always been to create a decentralized, efficient, and robust foundation for humanity's most valuable data. Since the launch of the main network, the effective computing power of the entire network is 9.586 EiB, the number of active storage providers is 3034, and the number of 24h messages is 1,297,094. It can be said that the entire Filecoin network is growing rapidly, and more and more Web3 applications are constantly being developed. Of course, the entire Filecoin community and extended ecosystem members are also thinking about how to position these key network players.

This time, FIP-0018 officially changed the term in marketing assets, documents, and communication channels from "miner" to "storage provider", which mainly has the following three benefits:

1. Better links with storage clients and users.

Enterprises and other Web2 members that potentially store data in the Filecoin network are usually not familiar with the encryption concept that supports the token economy; if the concept of "miners" and mining activities is used, users may confuse the concept and ignore the true value of the Filecoin network.

2. Communicate the usefulness of the network.

Different blockchains serve different purposes. Some storage customers and Web2 community members mistakenly believe that "mining" refers to a process that provides no useful output, is highly energy-intensive, and does not contribute unique functionality.

Filecoin is different from other blockchains because it provides a decentralized network to store useful data in an efficient manner, and it drives incremental value due to its unique features such as immutability. It is important to communicate and market these useful properties in simple terms that Web2 and Web3 members will easily recognize.

3. It positions the Filecoin community as a leader in the Web3 space.

Filecoin storage providers not only help provide archival storage for existing Web2 datasets, but also form the native storage foundation for the Web3 world of distributed applications.

It is important to highlight the differences between traditional Web2 cloud providers and those storage providers who are able to offer a unique experience or better service through Filecoin's decentralized features. With the development of Filecoin, storage providers can position themselves as infrastructure and service providers for storage and retrieval of NFTs, Web3 datasets, Web2 archives, etc.
